Suicide Prevention and Awareness Week

Doug Hoffman - 9/5/2025

Dear Comrades,
As we enter Suicide Prevention and Awareness Week (continuing throughout the month of September), I want to take a moment to speak directly to each of you, not just as your Commander, but as a fellow veteran who understands the weight many of us carry.
We all know the devastating toll suicide has taken on our community. Each loss is one too many. Behind every statistic is a name, a story, a family, and a future that was cut short. This week, and throughout the month of September, we reaffirm our commitment to hope, healing, and connection.
You are not alone. Whether you’re struggling yourself or know someone who is, please remember: help is available, and it’s okay to ask for it. A simple check-in, a phone call, or a heartfelt "How are you doing?” can make all the difference.
Throughout this week, educate yourselves on the warning signs and actions to take. I encourage you to explore the SAMHSA Suicide Prevention Toolkit, which offers powerful messages, graphics, and strategies to help spread awareness and support those in need.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, please call the Veterans Crisis Line at 988, then press 1. It’s available 24/7.
Let’s stand together in strength, dignity, hope, and purpose. Every life matters. Every voice counts. And every one of us has the power to make a difference.
Yours in comradeship,
Doug Hoffman
State Commander
